How to Find Good Drum Teachers
Learning how to play the drums can be very complicated.. There are a lot of things that you have to master. You have to get your feet moving at different rhythms than your hands, but everything has to remain in sync. Most people can not learn these techniques on their own. They have to use a tutor. But good drum teachers can be hard to find. Here are some techniques that you can use to find a good instructor.
Drum tutors are much harder to find than piano teachers or guitar instructors. But you can look in the same places to find someone to teach you the drums. If there is a personally owned music store, or a place that you know of that gives lessons, go and talk to them. They might not have a drum teacher on staff, but they might know of someone who teaches the drums. Many percussion instructors work independently, so you might have to get a personal recommendation from someone.
Another good way to find drum teachers is by keeping your eye out for flyers. Since many instructors work independently, they sometimes rely on flyers to get clients. A good place to look for these is outside music stores like Sam Ash, and Guitar Center. You can also talk to the employees of these big stores to see if they have any recommendation.
Another place that you can look is on the internet. Look at your city’s Craigslist page, or other community service sites to see if there is an instructor in your area.
If you can not find good drum teachers, you can find books and DVD’s that can help. These teaching tools can be very effective, but they do not offer the personal attention that a tutor can. They are a good back up though, if you can not find a drum teacher.
