Buying Second Hand Drums

Considering buying second hand drums? If you have never owned a drum kit before or even used a set of sticks, you could simply be throwing money away on a drum set you will not be able to use for long.

Buying used drums can be a good way to save money but if you're not careful, you could end up with equipment that is faulty or broken. The risks that this will happen increases even more when you are paying for a starter kit. Starter kits have cheaper hardware and cheap hardware breaks quickly. So, how do you make sure the drums you are buying will not fall apart days after you bring them home?

First, check the merchandise. A drum set has components that can be divided into three inspection zones. The first, the drums, include the lugs, bolts, hoops, heads, rims, and shells. The second are the cymbals while the third are the hardware, which include the mounts, bass pedal, hi-hat, braces, and the stands.

This is what you should go over when inspecting them.

? Shells: Are they perfectly round? Do they have dents or cracks?

? Rims and Hoops: Are they dented in some way? Are they perfectly round?

? Lugs and Tension Rods: Are there any missing rods? Do they create tension?

? Snare: Do the wires look okay? Do the mechanisms in the snare mechanisms work perfectly?

? Stands and Braces: Do they retract and extend as they should? Do they hold their positions when they extend or retract?

? Moving Parts: Do the bass pedal and hi-hat mechanism work?

The most important part of the drum is the shell. If this is damaged, you may as well buy a new drum. Do not forget to check all the parts of the second hand drums you buy. If you don't, you will end up overpaying for something that will not last you long or serve you well.
